Advocating for Our Beautiful Surroundings

Together, we can make a difference

WHAT IS GLARA?
Responding to population growth, GLARA was created in 1993 as an opportunity for local voices to be represented regarding the community and ecological health of the Green lake area.  GLARA has grown to be recognized by local governments and the membership for enhancing advocacy and education.  GLARA is nonpartisan and partners with the government of the day on providing input to such important features as the function of Transfer Stations, monitoring lake health through the vital work of water sampling and testing, wild fire interface safety, through to assisting the processes for policies to formalize a long-term vision for sustaining what is important to the area through landuse planning. Residents are kept up to date on the GLARA files through two to three newsletters a year.  Suggestions and concerns are communicated directly to the GLARA executive or at the more localized level by getting to know the GLARA Director living in your part of the lake area.  All questions and suggestions are welcomed.  GLARA is your organization. Let us know what you want to see, or be involved in within your community of Watch Lake, Green Lake or 70 Mile House. Share your ideas or contribute your suggestions and get involved.
        The Lakes
Located on the unceded ancestral lands of the Secwepemc Nation, Watch, Green and Pressy Lakes provide the ultimate in year-round outdoor activities.

Ice off - ice on dates

Ice off - ice on dates

These are the recorded dates of the ice off and ice on over the past thirty years. Note: the ice- on dates record only the ice covering the lake surface and not the thickness. The thickness varies from location to location so always measure the thickness prior to venturing too far. A wind storm on April 10th broke up the lake quite quickly this year.

Trail Network

The Green Lake area has close to 150km of trails for public use. These trails are maintained by snowmobile club volunteers and it expected that all off-road enthusiasts will help to avoid damage, misuse and littering.

Summer use

The snowmobile trails are open for use by all off road vehicles until the snow reaches a depth of 8cm. At this depth the trails are groomed for snowmobile use only. Pipeline officials recently announced, "it was illegal to quad on the pipeline right-of-way and they were going to start charging trespassers." Similarly, Conservation Officers along with Forestry Patrols are enforcing the regulations regarding having liability insurance when riding ATVs on Crown Land.

Camping

Green Lake Park is made up of 4 campgrounds: Arrowhead, Blue Spring, Emerald Bay and, Sunset View. The other 6 areas: Black Bear, Boyd Bay, Buckside Hill, Green Lake Islands, Little Arrowhead and Nolan creek are designated as Class “A” parks, dedicated to the preservation of their natural environments for the inspiration, use and enjoyment of the public. Other than Little Arrowhead these areas are unmaintained, and users are requested to avoid damage and littering.
